Biography

Prof. M. Borodovsky carried out his MSc in Physics and Ph.D in Applied Mathematics at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and started his research in Bioinformatics in 1985 at Institute of Molecular Genetics USSR Academy of Sciences. He is a Regents' Professor at the departments of of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science and Engineering and director of Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics at Georgia Institute of Technology.

In 1990, he started developing a new line of Gene Finding algorithms, by introducing the idea of considering genes as signals coming from Markov Models, for the first time. The initial product of his idea was called GeneMark which was a leading technique in its kind. The GeneMark program on the Tech website is still one of the very well-used softwares for gene predictions. GeneMark has been constantly improved and extended leading to other significant variations such as GeneMarkS, GeneMark.hmm, GeneMark Genesis, etc.

His lab currently works machine learning algorithms for computational analysis of biological sequences: DNA, RNA and proteins. They are developing algorithms to predict protein-coding genes and regulatory sites in genomic DNA.
